Brad               

As part of our series on the plumbing industry, I’d like to welcome Jo Egan from The Brisbane Plumbers here today. So Jo just to start, tell us a little bit about The Brisbane Plumbers. Where did you come from, and how long have you been operating?

Jo                 

Yes so we’ve been operating now for about 18 months, and yeah, the main field we operate in is the emergency after-hours market. So generally a lot of on call, non-business hours stuff. We tend to look after and help out clients when they need an emergency call out.

Brad

And would that be personal household clients or businesses or a mix?

Jo                    

Yeah, a mix of both. So we do domestic and commercial. Industrial we don’t do any of that, but definitely domestic and the commercial side, we look after.

Brad                

And when in the mix did the relationship with Affinitas Accounting start?

Jo                    

During the business planning stage. So we started planning roughly about two years ago, when we were looking for an accountant. Obviously we jumped online and did a local search, and Affinitas had great reviews and yeah, really good rapport with their clients. So yeah we jumped in and had a meeting with them about six to seven months prior before opening up our doors to start operating, and yeah they were a great help with business structure and setting up how we should run the company.

Brad               

So how does the ongoing relationship with Affinitas work? Where’s the value at for you in the ongoing relationship?

Jo              

Probably just that ability to being able to pick up that phone and get a hold of the accountant and ask a question, whether it be with accounting, receipting or reconciling through Xero. They’ve been really supportive in terms of us doing the bookkeeping that my wife and I do. It’s been really beneficial being able to do that ourselves and really have a good look at the numbers and how it works for us and how we’re operating.

Brad                

And I believe that the fact that Tammy was a young junior partner here and, in a young firm, was important to you.

Jo                   

Yeah that was a big factor. The initial meeting was with Tammy, and she’s a partner of Affinitas and that was really a big selling point, knowing that we could build a relationship with our accountant moving forward as the business grows.

Brad              

Now you’re very active on social media. We know that. So how does your marketing meets work, and what’s worked for you? And what have you found that hasn’t worked perhaps as well as you’d hoped?

Jo                  

Yeah, marketing’s always a tough one. As I mentioned before, I find it like the Rubik’s cube of trying to do the business. It’s pretty complex, but I find that doing the social media side of things kinda complements our website through, doing a bit of SEO with our current advertising crew that we’ve got. And also, being pretty heavily active doing Google Ads campaigns and getting to know a lot about that. Because if you can’t make the phone ring then that’s where the issues come, where you can’t get the cash flow coming in.

Have you found your referral business has been growing as well?

Jo                 

Yeah. It’s been quite lucky in the field that we are being after hours, people are pretty happy that you show up to the door at 9, 10, 11 o’clock at night, to help them out in a situation when they need it most. So, we find that people do often refer us because we’ve showed up at that particular time of day and night. They do often mention it to a family friend or colleague and pass the number on.

Brad                

And what about technology? How have you incorporated that in your business to generate some efficiencies?

Jo                  

The technology that we probably use the most would be, is your accounting software. So, we had dinner with a family friend who were doing their own roofing business, and they mentioned that they get receipts dropped on the office desk to do the bookkeeping. But through Xero, it’s something as simple as just entering the data once you have the receipt, taking a photo of it, and sending it off. And you know our books are balanced nice and easily through a process like that. So the app of Xero has been really, really easy for us to keep track of things.

Brad                

So how has your business grown so far? And how do you see it developing in the future?

Jo                   

We’ve been pretty happy with the growth in terms of the numbers we’ve been doing since starting. In terms of the future, the short side of futures we’re gonna keep it the way it’s going. I’ve got a young family at home so doing the after hours allows me time at home with family, Monday to Friday. But sometimes it can get pretty busy with what we do, but yeah, for the time being, we’re just stoked with how we’re going at the moment, and then maybe when the kids go to school in four, five years time, we’ll look to expand and start thinking bigger, out of the box I think.

So what would the personal success goals be for your business?

Jo                    

Goals? The big key factor is the family time. I’ve got a two and a half year old daughter and a three month old daughter at the moment now as well, so being able to be home when they’re there, it’s pretty satisfying and pleasing. So that’s … obviously we’ve got our targets and the goals we want to hit, revenue-wise. But being able to have the capacity to take time away from it, and be at home, is another big plus.

Brad                

And what about the plumbing industry in general? Where do you see that heading in the future?

Jo                    

In the future? Yeah it’s bright, but unfortunately there’ll be a shortage of tradesman. Which is great for the people that have the trade already, but at this stage, there’s not too many people taking up apprenticeships, or there’s not really many apprenticeships being available for young kids. You get called quite a lot during the week, for people wanting apprenticeships, but unfortunately there’s not many roles being filled. But it’s always evolving, and it’ll be interesting to see how it does pan out, 10 or 15 years down the track.

Brad                

And for those people who are thinking about starting out. Maybe they’ve got through their apprenticeship, and they’re thinking about starting out in a plumbing business. How would you suggest that they select an accountant and develop with a relationship with an accounting firm?

Jo                 

Yeah, just do your due diligence. Go see a couple of accountants. I think I sat with about three people that I had a big list of questions that we went through. So know what you want from an accountant, the relationship you want. But more importantly, how they can help you grow the business. I was quite fortunate with the first meeting I had with Tammy. She answered every single question that I wanted, well, and was confident in what she was saying and gave me the confidence to come join Affinitas, and get them to help us grow the business.
